Whether Hosea himself authored the book that preserves his prophecies is not known. The book of Hosea stands first in the division of the Bible called the Book of the Twelve (in the Apocrypha cf. Ecclesiastes ; see essay, p. ) or the Minor Prophets (a name referring to the brevity of these books as compared to Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel). Neviʾim, the second division of the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, the other two being the Torah (the Law) and the Ketuvim (the Writings, or the Hagiographa). In the Hebrew canon the Prophets are divided into (1) the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings) and (2) the Latter Prophets.

In The Five Books against Marcion, Tertullian, an early Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa, disperses an exhaustive repudiation of Marcion’s controversial ry to Christ’s teachings, Marcion (Marcion of Sinope) discounted the Old Testament and parts of the New Testament to form his own brand of “christianity”. Introductions, Overviews & General Resources: Hosea at Luther Seminary's Bible basics about Bible books, people, dates, places, and content, and take web-based self-tests.

The book of Hosea is pound for pound as difficult a prophetic book as one can find in the Bible, so we appreciate the work of J. Andrew Dearman in this extraordinary commentary. Dearman captures well the metaphorical theology of Hosea, and his thoughtful reflection on the text attends to the various issues of every passage in the book. Hosea 1 - The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash* king of Israel.
